History of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts

BJJ is a combat sport that was rooted during the early 20th century. It was developed by the Gracie family, specifically Carlos Gracie and his brother Hélio Gracie. They were first taught to do traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu by Mitsuyo Maeda who immigrated to Brazil. And is also a judo practitioner. 

From then on, the Gracie brothers modified the traditional Japanese art of judo and created their new style. The style emphasized ground fighting, submission holds, and leverage. Especially made for the smaller or weaker people. So they to defend themselves. The system was popular to be called "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu".

The new system was truly a success for the Gracie brothers. In the following decades , it became popular internationally. Also, with the help of the family of Gracie and their students, it became a popular martial arts.

Grappling is know to be the focus in Brazilian jiu-jitsu . And also for ground fighting. And it also has different aspects. Some of them are as follows:

  • Ground fighting - emphasizes the importance of controlling an opponent on the ground
  • Submission holds - a variety of submission holds such as chokes and joint locks can be used to force an opponent to submit or "tap out."
  • Leverage-based techniques - BJJ relies heavily on the use of leverage to control and submit opponents. Positions used are the guard, half-guard, and mount. To gain control and apply submissions.
  • Live sparring - Training in BJ includes "rolling". This allows practitioners to practice techniques and strategies in a realistic, sport-like setting.
  • Adaptability - One of the key features of BJJ. Developed over time are the new techniques and strategies. So this kind of martial arts is also adapting.
  • Self-defense - Martial arts are famous for their ability to develop an individual's self-defense. It is also being taught to military personnel and law enforcement.
