Rules and FAQ

Point Sparring Equipment Requirements

Point sparring requires:

  • Mouthguard
  • Closed-finger foam gloves
  • Foam boots
  • Foam helmet

Male competitors must wear a groin cup.

Not allowed:

  • Boxing gloves
  • Open finger / MMA-style gloves
  • WKF-style gloves
  • Ringstar or similar boots

WKF shin and instep protectors are acceptable if toes are covered.

Flag Sparring Rules

Flag Sparring follows the Whistlekick Open Tournament Ruleset.

Competitors may choose Flag Sparring as their one fun bonus division.

Power Breaking Gauntlet Rules

Power Breaking Gauntlet is a survival-style breaking division using progressively more challenging rebreakable boards.

  • All competitors in the division begin with the easiest board level.
  • Anyone who completes the break advances to the next board level.
  • Anyone who does not complete the break is eliminated.
  • Each competitor has a 10-second window to complete each break.
  • If they miss, they may reset and retry during that same 10-second window.
  • Competitors use hand techniques only. Elbow strikes are not allowed.
  • Competitors will use an event-provided board holder.

If all remaining competitors fail on the same board level, each remaining competitor receives one additional try. If nobody completes the break after that additional try, the remaining competitors are considered tied.

If Power Breaking Gauntlet ends in a tie, tied competitors will receive the same placement award.

Power Breaking Gauntlet divisions are planned as:

  • Men 18–34
  • Men 35+
  • Women 18–34
  • Women 35+
  • Teen Boys 13–17
  • Teen Girls 13–17
  • Youth 10–12, Boys/Girls Combined
  • Youth 9 & Under, Boys/Girls Combined

Divisions may be adjusted based on registration numbers for safety, fairness, and event flow.

Synchronized Forms Rules

Synchronized Forms is a 3-person team division.

  • Teams perform one empty-hand form together.
  • All standard empty-hand forms rules and presentation expectations apply.
  • No weapons, music, props, skits, demos, or extra performance elements are allowed.
  • The team must present the form together, with synchronization maintained across the entire performance.
  • Teams may include competitors of any age.
  • Teams may include competitors from different schools.
  • Each team member must be a registered competitor at the Whistlekick Summer Challenge.
  • Each competitor may only be part of one Synchronized Forms team.

Teams will initially be grouped as:

  • Black Belt Synchronized Forms
  • Under Black Belt Synchronized Forms

The highest-ranked competitor on the team determines a team's division. If at least one team member is a black belt, the team competes in Black Belt Synchronized Forms.

Divisions may be split further if registration numbers allow.

Scoring uses the same general criteria as other forms divisions, with synchronization added as an additional scoring criterion.

General Division Rules

Point-scoring targets include the front and sides of the torso and the area covered by the helmet.

Sparring is first to three points, with no time limit. Black belt divisions are five points.

Face contact is not considered a point, but controlled techniques showing that the strike could have made contact with the face are considered points.

Weapons and empty-hand forms are evaluated based on generally accepted criteria, including displays of speed, power, strength, energy, quality of stances, and overall performance.

Forms are not assessed based on technical accuracy, as this is an open tournament.
